Topic Time

Our topic this term is 'I Am Healthy'.  We have been learning about our body and how we can look after ourselves.

We learnt about some important parts of our body.  The kids made these great bodies to show what they learnt.

Great Grains!

Today we started learning about grains.  The grains group consists of wheat, rice, oats, barley and cereals.  They provide our bodies with vitamins and minerals that gives us energy to get through our busy days.  Sometimes called "brain food", grains are sometimes called carbohydrates.  They are the #1 form of energy for our brain and all the cells in our bodies.  Grains are jam-packed with fibre, which helps keep our digestive track happy and healthy.  Some examples of grains are....

Today we created some amazingly scrumptious collage sandwiches.

We also made a delicious grains treat, spaghetti baskets.  They were made with wholemeal bread and spaghetti, which is pasta - part of the grains group.

Yummo!

Here is the recipe...

SPAGHETTI BASKETS – grain food
Ingredients
·       12 slices sandwich bread
·       50g butter
·       300g can Spaghetti
·       1 cup grated cheese
Method
  1.    Trim the crusts from the bread and brush one side of each slice with a little melted butter.
  2.      Push the bread slices, buttered side down into 12 muffin tins.
  3.      Bake at 180°C for 15 minutes until crispy. At this stage the cases can be cooled and kept in an airtight container.
  4.      Fill the cases evenly with a spoonful of Spaghetti . Top each with equal quantities of grated cheese.

Vibrant Veges

Last week Room VH had fun experimenting with vegetables as part of our Food for Energy Topic.  We had fun making vegetable pikelets (a sneaky way to enjoy veges).  What a lot of fun we had making these delicious little healthy treats.  Great for the lunch box.

Here is the recipe :)

Veggie Pikelets

These scrumptious pikelets are packed full of healthy vegetables that your kids won't even notice. Whip them up for afternoon tea or pop into lunch boxes for a tasty and nutritious snack.

Ingredients:

2 cups (300g) self-raising flour
6 eggs
4-5 cups of mix vegetables, finely chopped or grated
1/2 - 1 cup grated cheese
drop of milk
olive oil
sour cream, to serve

Method:

  1. Mix flour, eggs, veggies and cheese together in a large bowl. Add seasoning, then add enough milk to the mixture until it is slightly runny.
  2. Heat a frying pan with a small amount of olive oil and drop a tablespoon of the mixture into the pan, patting into a neat circle.
  3. Cook on a medium heat until golden on each side.
  4.  Serve with sour cream.

Notes:
·      These pikelets are great to make for a relaxed weekend breakfast.
·      For an adult version, add one finely sliced and deseeded birdseye chilli and a handful of coriander leaves to the batter mix. Top pikelets with natural yoghurt flavoured with a small amount of curry.
·      Be sure to use a non-stick pan to stop things getting messy.
·      All kinds of veggies will work in this recipe. Try adding finely cut or grated carrot, zucchini, capsicum or corn for a vegetable sensation!

Gathering evidence and fruit fun

Lots of fun and scientific fun was had today in room vh.  We were learning to look carefully and make observations just like scientists and detectives do before making yummy fruit kebabs.

Our Digestive System Projects

Room VH have been working hard on our science projects to show how our digestive system works inside our bodies.  Today we shared all our research and learning to each other and the syndicate in our projects.

Ruby learnt that it takes between 2 and 12 hours to digest food.

Zyah learnt that our small intestine is about 7 metres long.  She even cut a piece of rope to show us how long that was - almost as long as our classroom.

Chester learnt that the oesophagus never stops moving.  It keeps shifting our food down our digestive system.

Emma learnt that our teeth crunch up all the food we eat into little pieces so that it can go down our oesophagus.

Charlie learnt that it takes between 1-6 hours for our food to go through our stomach.

Grace learnt that when food goes into our stomach it turns the leftover food into chime.

William learnt that the digestive system helps get energy for our bodies.

Celestine learnt that the large intestine takes the last of the nutrients from our food.

It was fantastic to see all the kids share their projects and learning with each other.
