Buggy Research

VH Kids learnt how to research this week.  They used books, search engines and videos to learn about a chosen bug.  The goal was to find out between 4 and 10 facts about a bug or insect.

We used Pic Collage to present our findings.  Working with a buddy was fun using Pic Collage on the I-pads.  They learnt about fonts, choosing colours and changing text size.  Titles and inserting images.

Bugs Bugs Bugs

This week we have begun learning about insects and minibeasts.  Lots of buggy things have been happening in VH.

We learnt about insects first and classified insect characteristics and traits.

Then we went on a bug hunt.  Lots of fun!

 

 

Butterfly Writing

Today in VH class a monarch butterfly hatched.  It is in our class.  I like it.  The chrysalis popped open and out came a butterfly.

Flutter, flutter, flutter!  Today in VH we saw a butterfly hatch.  It is so beautiful.  It ate her chyrsalis. It has white spots.

The Amazing Butterfly

Today Xavier brought in a special little cocoon.  We were amazed all day watching the beautiful butterfly emerge from its temporary home.  We talked, watched, wrote and then talked some more about this amazing act of nature.

Fun Butterfly Facts

• Butterflies are insects.
• A butterfly’s lifecycle is made up of four parts, egg, larva (caterpillars), pupa (chrysalis) and adult.
• Butterflies attach their eggs to leaves with a special glue.
• Most caterpillars are plant eaters (herbivores).
• Fully grown caterpillars attach themselves to a suitable twig or leaf before shedding their outside layer of skin to reveal a hard skin underneath known as a chrysalis.
• An adult butterfly will eventually emerge from the chrysalis where it will wait a few hours for its wings to fill with blood and dry, before flying for the first time.
• Butterflies have four wings.
• Butterflies often have brightly coloured wings with unique patterns made up of tiny scales.
• Most butterflies feed on nectar from flowers.
• Butterflies have taste receptors on their feet.
• Scientists estimate that there are between 15000 and 20000 different species of butterfly.
• Monarch butterflies are known for their long migration. Every year monarch butterflies will travel a great distance (sometimes over 4000 km), females will lay eggs and a new generation of monarchs will travel back, completing the cycle.
