First of all we had our early morning Matariki Celebration on Spinnaker Hill. Lots of VH kids got up early with their whanau to celebrate together.
We practised new words in Te Reo and made some labels of classroom objects.
Here is a retelling by Caleb, Layne, Zoe and Layne. We showed this at school assembly. Artwork was provided by the children using the ipad app Doodle Buddy and some other watercolour artworks.
VH kids did some great hei tiki art. This will be displayed in the new term :)
Here they are concentrating on their art. We used pastels and learnt to blend them to good effect.
Our shared book of the week was 'Daniel's Matariki Feast' by Rebecca Beyer and Linley Wellington. It is the story of Daniel who is nervous on his first day at school but through the class activities taht mark the Matariki Festival he learns that it is a time of remembering, of sharing and beginning new friendships. He learns the true importance of Maori New Year.
We checked out our school garden like Daniel in our shared book. There are lots of things growing: spinach, silverbeet, beetroot and more.
We read Daniel's Matariki Feast each day and thought about the importance of Matariki in our own lives.
One feast we had this week was hamburgers on Tuesday. On Friday we had our big Matariki Feast together. A big thank you to all our parents who provided such yummy and healthy food. It was a great week to end our Matariki week and all our learning in Term 2.
