What's Been Happening This Week...

Hi everyone, another cool week has come and gone. This week on our blog I have added some cool maths games that can be found on the Great Links on the sidebar. The children have played some of these games during our ICT session in the computer suite. We have been focussing this week on doubles.

This week we have created some fantastic flowers during art. These will be displayed in the cloak room to cheer us up on the wintery days ahead.

The children also practised their publishing skills. They chose their favourite piece of writing from the past two weeks and published them.

Next week we will be sailing on in our inquiry.... so we're lifting anchor and setting off to the land of discovery. We will begin our safari walk too through South Africa.

Remember to check out our maths games link.

The Americas

Ola, Hola and Hello from the Americas. This is the final stop on our whirlwind tour of our continents. We have learnt about North and South America today. We found that more people live in North America and that the climate changes from the North to the South. The children ate a traditional corn cuisine from Mexico prepared by Chef Howarth. We also discovered that the habitat of many of the South American animals is being endangered by humans. This afternoon we also had some special visitors from South America - two furry little guinea pigs courtesy of Anthony. Thanks to Cassidy for providing our South American music. What a wonderful week of setting sail for our Inquiry.

Africa

Jambo, Molo, Bawoni and Goeie More. What an exciting and unique continent Africa is. We spent the afternoon finding out facts, eating banana chips and dancing like zulu tribesmen. We found out where Africa was on our class globe. How hot it is in places and even saw how big the Sahara Desert is. Tomorrow is our last flying visit - and it will be flying as we are visiting two continents - North and South America. We're starting to get pretty exhausted having travelled right around our planet Earth in five days.

Bonjour, Ola and Ciao. This afternoon we made a flying visit to Europe. We enjoyed the tastes of Italy. We listened to Tchaikovsky and danced some European folk dances. We are all thoroughly enjoying our first stage of our Inquiry.

Go to www.wordle.net and have a go at making one of these real cool "Wordles"

5/5/10 What's Happening in Room VH

Kia ora, we have had a great day with four, yes four, mystery readers. We love you! Hearing all the different stories is so much fun.

Today we went to the computer suite and created an Elmer, a patchwork elephant. Elmer thinks everyone is laughing at him because he is different, so Elmer tries to make himself the same as all the other elephants. But he learns that being unique is special.

We used some thinking keys today too. We used the B.A.R Key (bigger, add, remove/replace) to create a better broom for the witch from Julia Donaldson's Room on a Broom. We used the alphabet key to think of delicious food for Mr Grinling the lighthouse keeper too. All this is displayed around our room or in our reading books.

Everyone is having a great time learning about different books.

4/5/10 What's Happening in Room VH

Today we started the day with our first mystery reader, Anthony's mum. She read us Boom Chicca Boom. We did our Daily Quick 20 in maths. Then we surveyed our favourite types of books in the library.

After morning tea we wrote a Book Review of our favourite books we have brought into school.

After lunch we had another mystery reader, Emma's mum. She read us 'Room on the Broom' it was funny. We designed our own super-brooms using the B.A.R key by making our broom bigger, adding things and removing or replacing some parts. They are very flash designs. Later we went to our buddies class. What a busy day.

3/5/10 What's Happening in Room VH

Hi everyone, we have had a fantastic start to Book Week. Today in maths we started with our Daily Quick 20. The we graphed the most popular books of all times. We also had our first surprise mystery reader, Mr Kelly. He read us his favourite book when he was a boy. He really liked it because his mum and dad used to read it to him at bedtime. We also had two more mystery readers, Mrs Wall and Cassidy's dad. It is fun to have these reader's.

Later we read 'The Light House Keeper's Lunch' and designed a sandwich that would scare away seagulls.

In the afternoon we watched 'The Gruffalo' with our buddies and then made a Gruffalo mask. What a great day.

Book Week

This coming week at Discovery School we are having Book Week.
In Room VH we have lots of fun reading, learning and creating happening.
Each day there are magic activities planned.
On Monday I encourage your child to bring in their favourite picture book or non-fiction book to share with others. Over the next few days it would be great if they could practice reading it aloud to share with their friends. We will be doing activities based around many books including The Gruffalo, Elmer, Dr Seuss books and many others.
The children will be finding out what teacher’s favourite books are and we will be having some very special mystery book readers each day. Throughout the school classes will be studying and celebrating books.
On Friday I encourage your child to choose a favourite book character to dress up as. We will have an especially fun day.
