On Wednesday last week we had Science in a Van. After the visit the kids wrote about the experience. It was a fantastic science 'performance' by Alan and Emily. The kids got to choose what type of writing they would like to present their ideas. Many chose to send thank you letters which have been posted off to Alan and Emily. A few wrote about the actual show. Enjoy some examples.

Science is alive and amazing at Discovery School
We have had an amazing start to NZ Science Week. Yesterday Mr Burns and Mr Kell did some amazing science for the whole school. We learnt all about air flow.
Today we met Emily and Allan from Science in a Van. We saw two experiments.
One was an optical illusion. We watch a twirling swirling picture and that made our brain think that something was moving. When it was moved away Emily looked really funny because our brains were still swirling and twirling.
Then Allan taught us about how sound moves. Vibrations move through the air. The sound vibrations enters our ears. Our ear drums vibrate and then our brain works out the sound.
He showed us how it works with a big whip. Boy it was loud!
This afternoon in Room VH we did an experiment with ice. We were trying to find out which ice melts the fastest. Was it a plain ice cube, an ice cube made of cordial or a ice cube made of sugar and water?
What do you predict?
We observed and drew pictures of what happened after 3, 6, 9 and 12 minutes. It was fun to count down!
Here are some pictures of our experiment.
Here is why we thought the plain ice cube melted the quickest.

Cross Country Practice
Every morning at 10.40 we have been increasing our fitness by running our cross country route. It has been a challenge but we are getting quicker and fitter with every run.
After each practice run we graph our results on our colour run chart. It is good to see our progress over the last week!

Double Trouble!
We have practicing our doubles this week. Solving puzzles, playing games and learning how to use our double facts and near doubles to solve math problems.
Here is a fun game to practice your doubles!

Great Start to Term 2
Kia ora
We have had a wonderful start to Term 2.
This week we have done all sorts in class. We have begun learning how to write an explanation. The class is compiling a book called 'Why People Wear Shoes.' We are going to share this in our school library. We did some wonderful observational drawings of shoes.
On Friday we participated in the national attempt at a world record 'The Big Crunch'. It was fun counting down together and then there really was a big crunch!
Even all the teacher's participated - even our buddy class teacher Miss Rowe.
We had a fun time with our buddies too. Here we are working together with them after the big crunch.
We really do have lots of fun in Room VH!

Welcome Back to Term 2
What a great start to the term (apart from the weather). I hope you all had a fantastic holiday break.
This term we have lots of exciting learning planned. Our major curriculum focus is science. We will be doing lots of hands on experiments in the classroom leading up to our science fair showcase later in the term.
Today we devised lots of science questions using 'What if?' 'How does?' and 'Which?' Each table group had a selection of objects as starters. Here are a selection of photos from our observations and thinking this afternoon.

We started in our new reading groups today and everyone has come home with a new guided reading book today. Please encourage your child to bring in their ReadIt book to school each day so books can be added.
Keep an eye out over the next few days for the latest Resolution newsletter which will let you know what is happening this term.
Take care,
Mrs H
