Discovery School Hangi 2015

What an amazing experience for VH kids and Discovery School.  This term we have been learning about kai.  To celebrate all our learning we shared together a hangi at lunch time today.

See all our fun over the last 2 days including the preparation, unveiling of hangi and all the actual munching.  Delicious!

Huge big thank you to our Whanau Group, Mrs Barbara and all the other adults who made this possible for us.  Feeding 500 people is a mammoth task!

Chapter Book Picnic

As part of our chapter book challenge every time a VH student has ready 5 or 10 books they get to spin a prize on our mimio.  Some of the prizes include: choosing a class game, 15 minutes free time with a buddy, a choice of prize from our treasure box and a picnic with Mrs H.

Last Thursday I had lots of fun enjoying a picnic with some super VH kids who had spun a lunch with Mrs H as part of our chapter book challenge.  We had lots of fun enjoying some time together.

Such a beautiful sunny day for a picnic :)

OW / OU Sound

This week we are learning about the ou/ow sound.  We have been practising by doing lots of ou/ow activities like this...

We have also written some funny 'Ouch' poems.

There are lots more displayed in our cloak bay.  Come in and check them out :)

Too Many Toys

This week we have started our topic 'Too Many Toys'.  We are learning about how to plan, design and make toys for others.  A secondary, but very important, aspect of our topic is thinking beyond ourselves.

Our scenario is....

Discovery Kindergarten need some new toys.  The little kids are growing up and they are getting a little tired of their old toys.   Some of their toys have even broken because the toys are so old.

The kindy kids are about 3 or 4 years old so we will need to think carefully about what types of things we can do.

How can we help?

This week we have thought carefully about what and how we can help.  We have come up with a process...

Find out what types of toys they want.

Agree on the toys.

Make a plan and design new toys.

What do we need (materials) and gather the materials

Make the toys.

Test the toys.

Remake/make better.

Give kindy the new toys.

Here we are ordering the ideas.

Our first step in our process is to 'Find out what types of toys the kindy kids would like'.  We all brainstormed questions that we could ask them.

Here we are practising interviewing people before visiting Discovery Kindy.

Today four nominated students from each of the Endeavour classes went to interview some kindy kids.  They were a little nervous but did a tremendous job.  Well done!

What a fun time.  Tomorrow our interviewers will be reporting back to the rest of the class so we can move onto Step 2 and Step 3 of our plan.

Lots and lots of learning is going on in VH and Endeavour :)
