Haiku Snow Poems

Today we have written some haiku poems. These poems come from Japan. They are only 3 lines long. The first line has 5 syllables. The second line has 7 syllables and the third lines has 5 syllables. Here are some of our snow haiku.

Snow is falling down.
I catch the falling snowflakes.
White is on the grass.

By Mackenzie and Hunter L

The snow is here.
It is covering my house.
I love the white snow.

By Lachlin and Grace

It's snowing outside.
Snow flakes tickling my red cheeks.
Snow is really fun.

By Hunter T and Meg

Snow falls from the sky.
Fluttering shiny white snow.
I hope it snows again.

By Jessica and Hayley

Cold and shivering.
Going down and going fast.
Snowflakes are coming.

By Lucy and Taine

Snow is not here now.
The snow has melted outside.
Snow was on the ground.

By William and Indya

Whiteness on the grass.
Snowflakes are falling quickly.
I love the cold snow.

By Dev and Tim

I love the cold snow.
Snowflakes going everywhere.
Always on the grass.

By John

Snow is falling down.
Snow is falling on my head.
Snowflakes going down.

By Kerre and Zyah

It is cold outside.
Snow makes me very happy.
Falling and falling.

By Taylor and Elias

The great snow is here.
I am having so much fun.
I throw big snowballs.

A Great Maths Week

A huge big thank you to all of you who supported our open maths morning on Friday. There were about 14 mums who were able to make it.

A especially big thank you to Paula Birnie who helped with the yumbo gumbo earlier in the week. We could not have had yummy soup without you.

Coming up in Week 3

Monday: Syndicate Assembly - spelling words come home
Tuesday: Jump Jap (if weather ok)
Wednesday: Library
Thursday: Kapahaka and Jump Jam
Friday: Buddies

Our focus in maths over the coming week is learning about weight and weighing things.

Take care,

Mrs H (aka Vicki Howarth)

Yumbo Gumbo

This week our big book is called Yumbo Gumbo. On the cold winter days it is yummy and warming to have a bit of soup. We each brought in a vegetable to share. We had carrots, onions, pumpkin, butternut squash, kumara, mushrooms, brown rice and lentils in our soup. We also added a can of tomatoes, chicken stock and even a bay leaf. It took five hours to cook in a crock pot. Our whole class smelt so yummy all day. Then we all tried some. Some of us thought it was delicious and ate it all up, others did not like it.

Maths is Alive at Discovery School

We are having such a fun Maths Week. We have been playing lots of maths games and using our maths knowledge to estimate and solve challenges.

I hope you have had a chance to play the games on the Maths Week website at home. This is fun to do together.

This afternoon we had a maths treasure hunt with our buddies all around the school. We had to solve maths problems and then decipher a code.

Here are some photos of our maths so far.

We estimated how many goals Mrs Jennings would get out of twenty. Mr Thompson had the challenge of swallowing raw eggs. We estimated how long it would take him. Boy he was quick!

Remember this Friday morning from 9am - 10am we are having an open morning. You are all invited to come in and enjoy the fun of maths with us.

We hope you can make it.

Busy Week of Settling into Term 3

Hi everyone, we have had a busy and fun-filled arty week. We have been continuing to reinforce our basic facts knowledge every day. The kids are getting so fast at solving addition problems. Our next step is to use this knowledge to solve harder number problems.

We have been learning and creating art too this week. Art words we have learnt this week are: primary colours, secondary colours, horizontal lines and vertical lines. We have used all these to create two artworks based on Dutch artist Mondrian - one a digital artwork and one a painted artwork.

Lots of you have tried to access the maths website. To access: username is vhclass, password is vhclass. Then click on the games tab :)

Next week is Maths Week in schools throughout NZ. We will be doing fun activities, participate in challenges and we also invite you to come in next Friday morning from 9am to 10am to share some maths learning and games with us.

Today we had fun doing some folk dancing. We hope you enjoy our video.

Welcome Back!

Hi everyone, welcome back to Term 3.
We have such a great term planned. We have already started on our Art Adventure - I Am An Artist! See our great digital art inspired by the Dutch artist Mondrian. We created these on Kid Pix using vertical lines, horizontal lines and only the primary colours.

Enjoy our creativity!

Snow

This is me, my brother and my cousins, Ashleigh and Bailey. My cousins flew from Auckland to Wellington. When it was nearly dark we went to the snow and had a snowball fight. John.
