Discovery Time

We love Discovery Time!  VH kids get to choose what they will do and how they will do it.  Being actively involved leads to more powerful understanding of different concepts.

This week we were again practising the key competency of 'Managing Ourselves.'  We had loads of activities to choose from under the concept of Transport.

We made paper planes.

Practised our ball skills.

Made paper rockets.

Constructed vehicles.

Had fun with our brothers and sisters too.

Discovery Time

Today VH Class and Adventure Syndicate had Discovery Time.  We did loads of activities all based around our new topic Transport.

We were practising Managing Ourselves.  We decided that these are some ways we can manage ourselves.

  • Play nicely
  • Including people by inviting new people to play
  • Speak kindly to others
  • Play safely so I don't hurt myself or others.
  • Use our manners too

CASEY:  I played safely in the hall.  I passed the ball and scored some tries.

MARISSA:  I had fun and made a hamster wheel.  I managed myself by being sensible.

LIAM:  Me, Layne and Marc made a jet plane together.  It had 3 booster rockets.  We managed ourselves by cooperating together.

SOPHIE:  I made a little house in KS class.  I managed myself by using the scissors properly.

LONDON:  Paige and I made a big house.  We included our friends.

SAM:  Austin and lots of other people and me worked together on a race track picture.  We made lots of roads and flags and race cars.  We managed ourselves by working together.

VH Kids loved Discovery Time and we look forward to it again next week.

Discovery Time: Science

On Friday afternoon VH class and the other Endeavour Syndicate classes had fun doing lots of science activities during Discovery Time.

Our focus this week was....

We were palentologists - making clay dinosaurs.

We watched how colours mixed making some spinning art.

Some people also mixed colours using tie-dye.

Some great measuring also happened after racing cars down a ramp.

We certainly love science!

Here is how we put in our best effort....

Benjamin – I made a rocket spy ship.  I concentrated really hard and I’m really happy with it.

Sidney – I concentrated and thought carefully  when I was making the book on the i-pad app Book Creator.

Sofia – I tried really hard to catch the bubbles to make my bubble art.

Marcus – I made a domino track and concentrated hard.

Tamsin – I concentrated hard when I was using the glue-gun so that I wouldn’t get hurt.

Anthony – When I was doing the milk science experiment I listened really well.

Charlotte – I used lots of colours to make my spinning art.  I did my best.

Jessyka – I made some bubble art, did a science experiment and made a dinosaur out of clay.  I tried my best in each thing.

Jack – I tried to make a phone out of cardboard and tried different ways to make it real.

Macklin – Ben and I made something together and it worked out really good.  It had superheroes too.

Leah – I made some bubble art and I tried really hard to make big bubbles.

Discovery Time - Problem Solving

For the last two weeks our social skill has been 'Using My Initiative.'  We have learnt that using your initiative is solving a problem by ourselves, without being told what to do.  Using our initiative is about having a positive attitude and being proactive, to make the most of all opportunities without giving up.

Initiative is a trait that will serve our children well all their lives.

We can use our initiative in lots of different ways like....
  • tidying up after ourselves at school and at home without being asked,
  • starting my reading and other homework at home without being asked,
  • getting the equipment I need ready to start my learning straight away, and
  • asking for help if I need it.
Today we practiced using our initiative and problem solving at Discovery Time.  We had loads of activities to choose from and we had so much fun!

Here are some photos of our Discovery Time.

Science experiment with Miss Bradley - what do you think will happen?

Marble run - How can you make the marble travel the furthest

Problem solving - completing the jigsaw puzzle

Problem solving using the i-pad app Trace.

Problem Solving and thinking outside the box....
