What a Fantastic Week!

We have been busy busy busy!

For news during the week Brooke and Nicola showed us their ballet exam dance that they were in last week. Wow they are talented dancers! Well done. I'm proud of you.

This week is our final week of writing about a moment in time. So this week we played with the school parachute. What a lot of squealing and smiles there were. The children have got really good at describing colours, feelings and movement.

We were scientists again this week. We learnt about a physical change by squashing bananas. Even though we changed the shape of the banana it still weighed the same. But the change was permanent because we couldn't put the banana back together.

Finally today, we enjoyed our ginger beer (well some of us did). One of the bottles erupted like a volcano when we opened it. The bubbles tickled our noses. It was fun to complete our learning about ginger beer. Cheers!

Chemical Reaction by Taine

I love science because watched a volcano explode. Everything has a chemical reaction. Volcanoes are dangerous but our one wasn't. Science is mostly about the world.

Science by Hunter T

In science so far I have loved making ginger beer the most. We had to feed the ginger beer with sugar so the yeast could eat up the sugar and make the fluid have lots of bubbles.

I love ginger beer.

Ginger Beer Bugs

It's time!

It's time to go into the studio. There is a whole bunch of people. I'm nervous. What will I get? 1 2 3 4 5 the music starts. I start grinning to the audience. I'm wearing a white top and some pink ballet shoes. My hair is in a big bun. Also a little tiara sits on my head. What a way to start the day! By Brooke

Wicked Writing

We are learning to write about a moment in time. The children decided which writing they would like to publish. Check out our "Wicked Writing" pages on the left to see their cool work.
The children chose either The Best Dessert Ever or about The Rainstorm.

We have been learning to:

  • Grab the reader’s attention through humour, anecdotes and language
  • Express our feelings
  • Write in the Present Tense
  • Use descriptive language – adjectives, verbs, similes
  • Organise our ideas.
  • Start sentences with different words and vary sentence lengths.

How do you think we've done?

Week 2 Zooms By!

We've had another great week in Room VH. This week we have been learning and practicing adding. Every day we did a quick quiz in maths. Really great improvement in just one week.

In reading, quite a few people have moved around the reading garden - congratulations to them - I'm so proud of you and all your progress. So this means we have new reading groups next week.

In science we started learning how to make soft drink. Some really good predictions were made as to how we could do this. Come in and having a look at these on our science wall. We then made a bug - not an insect but a yeast bug. Each day we have fed it with ginger and sugar. The sugar is needed to feed the yeast. The mixture is starting to get quite bubbly - carbon dioxide is building up.
Facts

  • In a ginger beer mixture you have sugar and active yeast. The yeast uses the sugar to make energy.
  • As the energy is made so is carbon dioxide.
  • Carbon dioxide gas dissolves into the liquid - the water and makes the water fizzy.
  • This process is called fermentation and is the same process that’s used to make things like beer and wine.

Next week we are going to make our soft drink.

Discovery School cross country is coming up fast so we have been out on some practice runs. It has been good to have most of the children wearing running shoes - this makes it so much easier for them if they are wearing the right sort of shoes. Hopefully the weather will be kind so we can continue to build up our running stamina next week.

Coming up in Week 3

Monday - Syndicate Assembly
Wednesday - Library time (this week we are going at 9am)
Thursday - Kapa Haka with Papa Murray

Have a good week and we'll let you know how our ginger beer bug goes.

Experiments! Experiments!

We have had a fantastic first week back at school. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. We visited all the other classrooms doing experiments as an introduction to our 'I Am A Scientist' theme. It was amazing. We learnt about magnets, mixtures, floating and sinking and finally solids, liquids and gases. Come in and have a look at what we have learnt.

We also started our descriptive writing - popping with popcorn. A good first effort but there are lots of things we will learn to make our writing more interesting for our readers.

In maths this term we are learning all about addition and subtraction and also time.

Loads of fun and learning. I can't wait for Week 2.

See you soon.
