Discovery Pupils Wows Parents and Teachers
The official World of WearableArt show in Wellington may have finished weeks ago, but the Discovery School version brought the colour and passion to life again earlier this week.
The school first performed a WOW show in 2009 - titled Welcome to Planet WOW - and returned to the intergalactic theme on October 23 and 24.
Co-ordinator Barri Dullabh said for much of term three, 440 children planned, designed and constructed their costumes in class.
''It's been great to see the way that the whole school has come together to put together fantastic items. Our oldest children have looked after the younger ones, giving them the confidence to perform.''
He said the students came up with the designs themselves and learnt skills such as co-operation, compromise and respecting of others' ideas.
The school's parents, present and past, grandparents, uncles and aunties all contributed to the costumes.
On Wednesday Kapi-Mana News had a front row seat as students strutted their stuff on the catwalk in the hall. A robot assistant guided the audience through the eight categories, including 'machines', 'foodilicious', 'game on' and 'taniwha'.
Although there were plenty of nerves from children as they took to the catwalk in front of family and friends, the event went down with only one minor hitch, when the computer-controlled audio system went down.
''I felt nervous at first but enjoyed it when people started clapping,'' said year 2 student Lucy Campbell said. William Hall from year 1 remarked, ''I liked being able to work with my friends''.
Four performances were held over the two days, attended by about 600 people.
COLOURFUL COSTUMES: Discovery School students used plenty of colour and originality in their ensembles.
