Buddy Time

To round off this very long and busy week.  We had fun with our big buddies in SMe class.  We love sharing, playing, talking and working with our buddies.  This is just one of the many things we love about Discovery School.

Principal Awards this Week

Big congratulations to Lucy and Layne.  You two have such a great attitude to your learning, never give up and have made such progress.

OW/OU Words

Our phonics focus this week was the ow/ou sound.

There are only two ways to spell this sound ou or ow.
Here are some rules.

If the OW sound comes in the middle of the word, it can be spelt ou or ow but most often it is ou.
OW - most often comes at the end of a word.
Before an n or l, it is usually OW eg.  down or howl.
Before an nd, it is usually OU, eg. round or found.

This week our poem was called Howie the Owl.  So today we completed some fantastic watercolour owl art.  Come in and check it out next week.

VH kids concentrated so hard on their owls.

Maths Rotations

Each Friday we love to play maths games to consolidate our weeks maths learning with our Think Crews.

This week we had 6 stations covering many aspects we have been reviewing over the last week.  VH kids enjoys Aunties Pasta which is a fun fraction game where they have to collect different pizza pieces which represent different fractions.  We played a multiplication board game, an addition puzzle, place value cards, teen number bump game and the class favourite of maths apps on the i-pads.

Here we are having fun whilst practising our maths skills.  Gotta love those smiles :)

Library Time

VH kids love to visit our library and you can tell by the photo they especially enjoy story time.

We have been using our library on a daily basis because everyone is reading so many chapter books in the class chapter book challenge.  I wonder whether we will beat Term 3's total chapter books read of 263?  Only 20 more days to go.

Thank you Mrs Nicholson for always choosing great books for us to enjoy :)

Let's go shopping!

Over the past five weeks VH kids have been learning about money.  We have been focussing on recognising money, showing values with coins and notes, writing it and adding it together.

Today we had lots of fun grocery shopping.  We had a bank, shoppers and checkout operators.

Oh so many groceries to choose from :)

Discovery Time

Today VH Class and Adventure Syndicate had Discovery Time.  We did loads of activities all based around our new topic Transport.

We were practising Managing Ourselves.  We decided that these are some ways we can manage ourselves.

  • Play nicely
  • Including people by inviting new people to play
  • Speak kindly to others
  • Play safely so I don't hurt myself or others.
  • Use our manners too

CASEY:  I played safely in the hall.  I passed the ball and scored some tries.

MARISSA:  I had fun and made a hamster wheel.  I managed myself by being sensible.

LIAM:  Me, Layne and Marc made a jet plane together.  It had 3 booster rockets.  We managed ourselves by cooperating together.

SOPHIE:  I made a little house in KS class.  I managed myself by using the scissors properly.

LONDON:  Paige and I made a big house.  We included our friends.

SAM:  Austin and lots of other people and me worked together on a race track picture.  We made lots of roads and flags and race cars.  We managed ourselves by working together.

VH Kids loved Discovery Time and we look forward to it again next week.
