Symmetry
On Friday morning VH kids began extending their learning of symmetry. We watched a funny rap to remind us what symmetry is. Just click on the picture to watch again :)
We learnt lots of new symmetry words.

We played lots of symmetry activities to reinforce our new learning, finding and creating symmetry using objects. Loads of fun.
Here is a game you can play to practise your symmetry skills. Just click on the picture to have some symmetry fun!
100 Days and Syndicate Assembly
What a great start to Term 3. VH kids had so much fun catching up after the holidays and seeing their friends again.
Our week together started really well. VH class hosted Syndicate Assembly on Monday. Our hosts did so well leading assembly.
Congratulations to our certificate winners and studyladder stars too! It is so much fun receiving certificates for great work!
Look at those smiles :)
On Wednesday we celebrated together 100 days at school. What a fun day - we did 100s of fun activities. One of the funniest was using the app 'Make Me Old' to look 100 - here are a couple of examples. If you have a chance come in and see our display.

School Assembly and Junior Choir Performance
On the last day of Term, VH class hosted Discovery School Assembly.
Here are our amazing hosts Marc, Austin, Marissa and Sophie getting ready.
At the start of every assembly a tradition is to sing NZ's National Anthem.
Discovery School Junior Choir performed for the first time. They sang a new song written by some Year 7 and 8 students from Auckland called We Are Aotearoa.
Mrs Barbara got presented with a special korowai for all her work on Matariki and Te Reo around the school. She was pretty surprised and happy.
Our school song this was Pakeke Mai - here are our kids leading the song - great moves!

Maori Language Week 2016
The last week of Term 2 was Te Reo o te Wiki (Maori Language Week). VH Class had lots of fun using te reo in the classroom. Here are some highlights.
First of all we had our early morning Matariki Celebration on Spinnaker Hill. Lots of VH kids got up early with their whanau to celebrate together.
We practised new words in Te Reo and made some labels of classroom objects.
Here is a retelling by Caleb, Layne, Zoe and Layne. We showed this at school assembly. Artwork was provided by the children using the ipad app Doodle Buddy and some other watercolour artworks.
VH kids did some great hei tiki art. This will be displayed in the new term :)
Here they are concentrating on their art. We used pastels and learnt to blend them to good effect.
Our shared book of the week was 'Daniel's Matariki Feast' by Rebecca Beyer and Linley Wellington. It is the story of Daniel who is nervous on his first day at school but through the class activities taht mark the Matariki Festival he learns that it is a time of remembering, of sharing and beginning new friendships. He learns the true importance of Maori New Year.
We checked out our school garden like Daniel in our shared book. There are lots of things growing: spinach, silverbeet, beetroot and more.
We read Daniel's Matariki Feast each day and thought about the importance of Matariki in our own lives.
One feast we had this week was hamburgers on Tuesday. On Friday we had our big Matariki Feast together. A big thank you to all our parents who provided such yummy and healthy food. It was a great week to end our Matariki week and all our learning in Term 2.

PE with our Buddies
To round off our week we had fun playing games with our big buddies from SMe class. We had fun choosing from equipment on our PE Trolley (This is a class favourite!).
Loads of fun to end a really busy, exciting, creative, arty week!
All About Time
This week VH Kids have started their maths unit on Time. We have been exploring concepts of tim, days of the week, months, am and pm and how longs is a minute, 5 minutes an hour.
We've sorted and classified and just had lots of fun exploring time.

Matariki Think Crews
This week we got into new Think Crews. Think Crews are a great way to learn to work cooperatively and in a team.
We read the really cool legend called The Star Fishes about the Matariki stars.
We hope you enjoy them :)
We read the really cool legend called The Star Fishes about the Matariki stars.
We worked in our teams to create a picture retelling of the legend.
Each member of the Think Crew retold a part of the legend. They produced some superb pictures of the story. Two groups even got to take their retelling to Mrs Jennings.
The next day, they worked together to retell the legend in their own words cooperatively. Mrs H then typed them up.
Our next step was to reproduce their visual picture as an illustration to go with their story using the i-pad app Doodle Buddy. This was pretty fun to do.
Here are two of our final legends. Come into visit us to see the rest.
We hope you enjoy them :)
